The Product Optimization Engineer is part of the Laboratory Products Division (LPD) which unites deep scientific expertise, a collaborative culture and rich resources to deliver the lab equipment and consumables that our customers need to achieve their scientific goals – quickly, reliably and safely. Position Location: Marietta, OH or Asheville, NC

How will you make an impact?

The candidate will support the design and manufacturing of laboratory equipment with specific responsibilities on existing electrical & mechanical components, electrical & mechanical subsystems and product testing and develop a project manager process as well as be accountable to lead own project(s). Additionally, support the Value Stream Managers in troubleshooting and resolving product engineering, costing, quality, and packaging issues.

What will you do?

  • Interact with all areas and levels of the company to bring a positive result in product development, production launches, optimizing existing products, using a multi-disciplinary approach to problem solving, and works to motivate team members toward the common goal.

  • Design and use of testing protocols and fixtures for medical and life science devices.

  • Work alongside other POE team members and with other cross-functional groups to develop electrical and mechanical systems and identify/implement projects for design optimization of the company’s laboratory products, including freezers, biological safety cabinets, shakers, incubators, and water systems.

  • Work with internal project team which consists of quality, regulatory, R&D, operations, supplier/sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, and sales.

  • Must know how to effectively run projects, coordinate contractors, and direct the activities of a technician.

  • Document project progress and track future product development milestones & tasks.

  • Lead Continuous Improvement initiatives and support all PPI, Keys and Lean projects.

How will you get here?


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing or Materials Science or related field.


  • 5+ years of experience in a technical manufacturing environment in positions of increasing responsibility or 3+ years of related experience with an advanced technical degree.

  • Minimum of 1 year complex project coordination and/or project management experience.

  • Investigate and analyze customer service problems and design improvement suggestions.

  • Act independently with minimal supervision to conduct smaller approved projects. Expected to make suggestions on improvements based on recent technical knowledge.

  • High level of self-discipline, drive, and a proven ability to lead a cross – functional team

  • Experience with transitioning new products into production.

  • Experience with regulated environment –including UL, CSA and FDA.

  • Refrigeration manufacturing processes/technology and mechanical/equipment areas desired.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Knowledge of the basic principles of Mechanical Engineering, including either Solidworks or Pro-Engineer CAD systems.

  • Knowledge of design process and analysis techniques such as FEA, FMEA, Risk Analysis and Tolerance Analysis.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time and utilize CRT to perform job functions.

  • Ability to sit and talk with suppliers on the telephone or in person for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • 10% travel may be required.
