Thermo Fisher Scientific Senior Manager, Engineering in Bend, Oregon
As a member of the Site Leadership Team, the Senior Manager of Engineering supports the site’s growth both strategically and operationally. This role oversees the Engineering, Maintenance, and Validation functions, which all support the site operational departments in procurement, installation, maintenance, calibration, qualification and troubleshooting of process equipment, utilities, and laboratory equipment. Oversees capital projects including capital allocation, capital expenditures, capital reporting, contractor contract management and project planning/oversight. Owns the site’s Capital budget and Master Planning documents.

Manages and leads the Facilities, Engineering and Maintenance Department including the development/implementation of systems, processes and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Ensures compliance with applicable regulations from municipal, state, and federal agencies.
Develops and maintains the Site Equipment/Facilities Master Plan.
Consistently works to improve department workflow and standards.
Owns the site’s capital budget.
Works with internal customers to scope, plan, and execute site-wide projects in order to meet financial targets and timelines.
Represents Thermo Fisher in contracts with outside vendors, contractors, engineers, regulatory authorities, and consultants on a frequent basis during execution of a major project.
Works closely with Quality, Operations, Finance, Facilities and Site Management to execute projects without impeding day-to-day operations.
Generates standard work plans/flows for engineering projects and ensures execution of all required work streams.
Works with team to draft, review, and approve technical documents including proposals, schematics, drawings, standards, procedures, and specifications.
Understands and provides direction on building design, laboratory design, automation infrastructure design, utility design and general site related projects.
Responsible for proper operation of plant utilities (refrigeration systems, HVAC, electrical, etc) and clean utilities (process water and compressed gases).
Drives Good Engineering Practices, which includes, but not limited to, regulatory compliance, equipment reliability, and environmental sustainability.
Responsible for maintaining engineering, maintenance, validation, calibration and other records
Manages design, planning, and execution of capital projects.
Manages (or delegates within group) contracted Engineering and Maintenance Services for capital projects, equipment, building and grounds.
Works with Supply Chain to ensures adequate inventory of spare parts and materials as part of the facility’s total preventative maintenance strategy.
Works with EH&S to ensure compliance with Safety guidelines and standards.
Collaborates with Operations and Operational Excellence groups to execute continuous improvement (Practical Process Improvement - PPI) initiatives. Responsible for the building automation system (BAS), building management system (BMS), equipment automation, and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Minimum of four-year Engineering degree required, with an advanced degree in business/engineering/or technical field preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of Facilities and/or Process/Project Engineering experience in Pharmaceuticals, with management experience. Engineering experience in alternative regulated fields may substitute as determined appropriate. Experience with and a strong understanding of capital budget management, technical project management, Good Engineering Practices, maintenance trades, and building codes.
Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.
Works on problems of diverse scope where it is critical to rapidly exercise logical/thoughtful judgement with a high level of clarity. Decisions must be made in alignment with the site and corporate goals and objectives. Has working understanding of Project Management methodologies. Frequently interacts with corporate senior leadership, site management, group managers/supervisors, end users, and vendors. May interact with company clients. Interactions often include technical, financial, and/or personnel issues. This role is a leadership role with the expectation to plan and schedule beyond daily tasks, 3 months to several years out. Excellent track record of leadership of high functioning teams that practice open communication. High level of organizational and planning capabilities, as well as, exceptional troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
Position requires ordinary ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about office locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; manipulation (lift, carry, move) weights up to 50 pounds; visual acuity to use a keyboard, computer monitor, operate equipment, and read materials for prolonged periods of time; ability to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear for prolonged periods of time.
