How will you make an impact?

The Program Manager will be part of the Strategy, Portfolio, and Program Management Team at ThermoFisher Scientific. As part of this team you will have Portfolio Leadership as well as Program Management responsibilities. The Portfolio role could include the role of Portfolio Lead for one of the business segments within the Cell Biology Business Unit. Portfolio Leadership will focus on all aspects of maximizing the return on new product development investments.

The Program Manager role will include responsibility for leading product development teams through ThermoFisher Scientific’s best practice stage gate Product Commercialization Process (PCP). The Program Manager will ensure the teams follow product development/program management best practices, adhere to specific regulatory requirements (as needed), ensure design control standards are met, and will drive program budget adherence and overall project execution. The Program Manager will mentor junior Program Managers in best practice program management through informal and formal means such as schedule reviews, sharing schedule building knowledge, and mentoring on managing difficult team dynamics.

What will you do?

  • Leads, directs and is responsible for day-to-day aspects, on-time delivery, and risk management of projects and programs.

  • Plans in detail and conducts schedule analysis in keeping with the culture at ThermoFisher Scientific. Project Planning to include analysis of primary, secondary, and tertiary critical paths is expected. Use of MS Project or equivalent tools is mandatory for all projects.

  • Estimates resource demand which will accompany schedule analysis to ensure proper staffing of projects and programs.

  • Collects and analyzes portfolio data to highlight where resource supply is not balanced with demand across the portfolio. This exercise starts with each Program Manager’s portfolio of programs and expands to the entire Cell Biology portfolio as projects are rolled up at the business unit level.

  • Mentors junior project/program managers in fundamentals of project and portfolio management.

  • Leads, directs and is responsible for day-to-day aspects, on-time delivery, and risk management of projects and programs.

  • Acts as project champion and project “general manager”; manages team to execute all project deliverables; leads cross-functional core team.

  • Manages project budget; tracks actual versus plan and resolves issues as they arise.

  • Reviews team progress against requirements and plans; resolves deviations

  • Holds team members and functions accountable for on-time execution of project deliverables escalating issues when necessary to provide core team members with needed support.

  • Provides training and constructive input to core team members.

  • Provides clear, concise information and reports to all levels of the project team and executive management.

  • Interacts with peers, functional groups and customers; presents project status and updates to the Product Approval Committee.

How will you get here?

  • 6+ years of experience in managing projects of varying size and complexity through stage-gate processes, preferably in the life sciences.

  • Bachelor's degree in scientific field or business administration; or equivalent trade-off in related professional work experience.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.

  • Outstanding organizational, planning, process development, communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills

  • Experience working with and effectively communicating (listen, speak, present and write) to all levels of management and building working relationships with others outside of the project team.

  • Must be able to work effectively as a member of the Portfolio and Program Management team and in a matrix reporting environment.

  • Ability to organize and disseminate information efficiently, and convey expectations of accountability.

  • Strong time management skills, prioritization schemes and willingness to “take ownership of issues and tasks”.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in a biological science, particularly experience with cell culture and analysis.

  • Experience developing products in a regulated environment

  • Experience with MicroSoft software, including MS Project.

  • PMP certification
