The MSD Operations Engineering group is responsible for smooth introduction of new products into the factory and field. This group collaborates closely with the Product Lifecyle Management (PLM), Product Marketing, R&D, manufacturing, logistics, purchasing, quality, and Global Technical Support (GTS) groups within Thermo Fisher Scientific to ensure development of sustainable products according to the latest quality standards, at lowest COGS and in line with best practices. They are also responsible for Sustaining Products support after transfer from design to volume production and through the product end of life. This group collaborates closely with other internal groups to sustain products and define product and process improvements throughout the product lifecycle. This position is located in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Summary:

The Operations Engineer defines factory and service requirements for new products and contributes to the product and process improvements after release. The engineer understands the importance of customer satisfaction, and succeeds through dedication, enthusiasm, cooperation, technical expertise and working with a network of expert people within the company. Additionally, the engineer is to provide technical support in order to enable efficient solutions to problems in Manufacturing and Supply chain. The position closely interfaces with various company functions to solve complex problems and to ensure that system specifications are met in compliance with company requirements for product shipment to customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Work on New Product Introduction (NPI) projects as they transition from concept through release. Responsible for completing all NPI deliverables assigned to NPI Engineering.

  • Sets up training and coordinates/trains Manufacturing, Sustaining Products and Service personnel in new product build, test, install and repair procedures. May develop advanced troubleshooting procedures.

  • May execute advanced troubleshooting in factory or field service.

  • May provide input or execute engineering changes to support factory and service as needed.

  • Supports factory and field service engineers with first builds, installs and upgrades of newly introduced systems and modules to ensure proper working order. This may require travel to various customer locations worldwide to support installations and upgrades.

  • Gives input for ongoing training for factory and field service engineers.

  • May execute troubleshooting in factory or field service

  • May provide input or execute engineering changes to support factory and service as needed.

  • Provide technical product sustaining support from product release into manufacturing through end of service

  • Develop and maintain technical product and process documentation through ECO process

  • Design tools and test fixtures

  • Provide technical support to the factory, to ensure shipping of quality products on-time to customers

  • Conduct detailed troubleshooting and analysis of system or component level problems that affect reliability, performance, etc. This includes the use of statistical analysis, Kaizen methodology or other established methods

  • Support the supply chain with engineering expertise. This includes the analysis of parts for reliability, manufacturability, vendor qualification support and supplier technical quality issues

  • Support Field Service/GTS with product escalations as necessary. May require some on-site support at customers

  • Perform hands-on assembly, testing and training of personnel as required during project work (i.e., assembly, test or measurement, troubleshooting)

General requirements:

  • University degree in a technical discipline, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required skills

  • 2 -7 years of technical experience in high-tech industry environment in service, development or manufacturing

  • Willingness to work in high-tech industry manufacturing environment

  • Must demonstrate ability to create technical documentation and engineering reports using common Microsoft Office and Acrobat applications

  • Demonstrated ability to plan and resolve issues that involve gaining cooperation of cross-functional, multi-cultural groups and sites without damaging relationships.

  • Must be able to work for extended period in clean room environment

  • Must have ability to obtain a valid passport and travel regionally and internationally as required

  • Must have a professional working proficiency in written and spoken English.

  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated experience participating or managing concurrent technical projects

  • Senior knowledge in a specialized technical field

  • Demonstrated experience with process improvements and methods. Experience with use of statistical process control and statistical problem solving methods, including Six-Sigma methods, is preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to provide clear and concise analysis of data and experimental methods that may involve multiple factors

  • Self-starter who is also highly productive when not supervised to meet the agreed objectives

  • Must function as a productive team member at all time

  • Must be able to plan and resolve issues that involve gaining cooperation of multiple cross-functional departments and cross-sites without damaging relationships

  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills in peer to peer interaction as well as in networking with senior internal and external personnel in own expertise area
