Location/Division Specific Information
The Sr. Manager, Manufacturing (Madison, WI) reports to the Sr. Director of Operations and is a strategic partner in the manufacturing operations function, overseeing an organization of approximately 20 employees and $7M+ product and service revenue. This position is responsible for the execution of a compound screening service and the manufacturing of >350 cellular products used by drug discovery clients.
How will you make an impact?
The Sr. Manager ensures data and products produced are manufactured with the highest level of quality in a safe and timely manner that will meet or exceed customer expectations. This position manages teams in Madison, WI and Paisley, Scotland. The position is responsible for direct management of supervisors and may also manage individuals that specialize in areas of hardware and software engineering, biochemical and cell-based assays, cell culture, quality, and project management. The Sr. Manager is responsible for performance of production teams including safety, quality, delivery, inventory, and productivity. This position acts as relationship builder to internal suppliers, support functions, and customers in Sourcing, Planning, Procurement, Quality, Engineering & Maintenance, R&D, Product Management, and other sites, to create value across the organization that focuses on improving the external customer experience. This position provides influential leadership that ensures product planning, scheduling, sourcing, materials availability and equipment maintenance are effective in enabling the teams to achieve customer focused and financial goals. The role drives the implementation of PPI-Lean Enterprise, is responsible for eliminating waste and improving flow, and for building a culture that is effective at root cause and corrective, preventive action.

Develops and executes short and long term strategy for team capacity, equipment and capital planning, flow and manufacturing footprint management, and program initiatives in support of plant wide X matrix.
Establishes goals, sets priorities and coordinates all related activities within the team to drive focus towards meeting common business objectives.
Acts as a plant wide business partner for resource sharing/deployment towards the highest priority plant initiatives.
Is Growth focused, leading the Process Improvement (PPI) strategy, PPI funnel building & execution, and PPI coaching; actively champions PPI charters.
Active participation in Daily Management: Tier 2 active participant; attends Tier 1s to observe and coach supervisors.
Monitors, reviews, and improves manufacturing and quality related activities and drives corrective and preventative actions. Focuses team on using standardized work practices.
Oversees and manages team expenses to meet budgets and financial objectives and proactively seeks opportunities to drive improvement of the operating results.
Responsible for maintaining proper staffing levels, scheduling and organizing work assignments within the company policies and procedures.
Provides leadership guidance during Gemba walks, Kaizen events, Management Reviews, etc.
Manages team KPIs and trends. Identifies gaps, evaluates root cause with data driven approach, and implements countermeasures effectively.
How will you get here
- An advanced degree such as an MBA is a plus; BS or equivalent degree required.
- Minimum of 10+ years of progression in leadership positions of increasing responsibility, with a preference for experience in a Services-oriented manufacturing setting requiring high reliance on effective use of laboratory equipment and integrated data management systems. Multi-site, global management experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Strong leadership and decision making ability.
Knowledge, experience or training in Lean techniques and proficient in process auditing. Possess a continuous process improvement mindset with the ability to effectively lead and manage change.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite.
Possess a solid working knowledge of other business functions such as Logistics, Finance, Engineering, Planning, EH&S, Facilities, Quality.
Experience with life sciences industry, high-throughput screening, fluorescence-based assays, and drug discovery preferred
Works in office environment and laboratory environment
Interacts with subordinate, peers, superiors, suppliers and customers on a daily basis. 5% travel, including international.
