Thermo Fisher Scientific Director of Communications in Waltham, Massachusetts
The Communications Director, Laboratory Products and Laboratory Chemicals, is a senior member of the Life Sciences Solutions (LSG) Group’s Communications team. LSG is Thermo Fisher Scientific’s largest operating group, with more than 20,000 global employees and generating $8B in annual revenue. This role will be responsible for internal and external communications for the Laboratory Products Division (LPD) and the Laboratory Chemicals Division (LCD). The role is a managerial level position with two direct reports and one matrixed report. The Communications Director will report to the Senior Director of LSG Communications.
Internal Communication : The role will be responsible for developing and executing key communication programs and activities to help employees within the supported businesses better understand the group and division strategies, help build manager communication capabilities, drive engagement and help connect employees to both the work within the businesses, LSG broadly and the company overall. The role will be critical in partnering with the change communications team, key business stakeholders and HR leadership on change management initiatives, ensuring the right stakeholder approach and messaging is considered. The role focuses on supporting the division leadership on executive communication and engagement strategies, including developing leadership communication content and mechanisms, and overseeing the content creation for sharing stories about the business to internal audiences. This senior level communications position will also provide guidance to the team members leading internal communications for the group’s BioProduction Division and the commercial and global operations organizations.
External Communication: The role will also be responsible for the public relations (PR) strategy for LPD and LCD and will recommend and evaluate earned media opportunities. The position will manage LPD’s and LCD’s external PR agency, overseeing the execution of PR programs, and will work closely with the divisional marketing organizations and corporate public relations and government relations teams to coordinate PR activities at trade shows, congressional site visits and other customer related events. In addition, the role will interface with corporate communications on crisis communication actions.
Waltham, MA with travel to Carlsbad, CA and other company locations as needed
Working with the Senior Director of LSG Communications and appropriate business and HR leadership, establish targeted internal communications strategies/mechanisms aligned to key business and employee focus areas to help drive employee engagement.
Provides executive level communications support for LPD and LCD leadership
Serves as liaison with other communication team members across the company in order to provide a connection to groups/divisions/technologies related to the businesses supported.
Provides communications support and guidance for employee engagement initiatives.
Develops PR strategy for the supported businesses and leverages PR content where possible in internal communication mechanisms.
Leads communication and change management activities, ensuring communications are well-planned and delivered regarding any business related changes.
Serve as employee communications liaison to assess targeted needs and facilitate understanding of specific stakeholder groups as it relates to program and project roll-outs and change management efforts.
Critical involvement in driving inspirational story generation and dissemination throughout the business to inspire and engage employees in the future of the organization, the promise of LPD and LCD products and their impact on customers and society.
Project manages various employee communication initiatives as needed.
Creates content for town hall presentations, manager communication decks, intranet, blogs, podcasts, videos and digests to help achieve above strategic responsibilities.
Manages the intranet presence for LPD and LCD.
Writes leadership scripts or other communication content as needed.
Determine budget and report costs associated with public relations needs, specifically managing all outside vendors including public relations agency and video production, for supported businesses.
Understand and implement best practices for review of content to meet branding and publishing in local languages.
Provide ongoing metrics for media coverage.
Demonstrate experience with corporate policies, communications policies and vehicles.
Demonstrate ability to manage personnel in a matrix organization.
Works to bring customer stories for supported businesses to our employees.
Writes, reviews and edits organizational announcements and other communication as needed, ensuring appropriate corporate processes are followed.
Provides strategic guidance to direct and matrix reports.
Manages any required communication vendor relationships.
Minimum 10-15 years progressive experience in corporate or employee communications, with an emphasis on change management, PR and employee engagement initiatives.
Manufacturing industry experience a plus.
Expert writer, editor and communicator.
Excellent PowerPoint capabilities.
Undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, or similar discipline; advanced degree preferred.
Ability to work with senior executives from across the organization.
Experience in non-computer facing employee communications.
Experience in developing and implementing change management strategies.
Ability to travel internationally and domestically as needed.
Sense of humor and flexibility is key.
